Report: Bristol Bears 9-26 Saracens
Friday, September 17th 2021
Seven penalties from the boot of Alex Lozowski and Alex Lewington's late try condemned the Bears to an opening day defeat to Saracens at Ashton Gate.
Three penalties apiece from Callum Sheedy and Saracens fly-half Lozowski sent the sides into the break at nine apiece, with the Bears coming closest to breaking the deadlock through Ioan Lloyd following a dazzling step and break from the imperious Charles Piutau.
Three more Lozowski penalties early in the second half fired the visitors into a nine-point lead - and when the Saracens number ten landed a seventh 15 minutes from time, the Bears were left with a mountain to climb.
Lam's men stepped up a gear and came close through Vui and Thacker, but at the other end, Saracens landed the knockout blow nine minutes from time, when the outstanding Lozowski's perfectly weighted kick was collected by a sliding Lewington in the right-hand corner.
