Report: Bristol Bears Women 53-5 Dragons Women

Bristol Bears Women run in nine tries to secure an emphatic victory in their final pre-season fixture at Shaftesbury Park this afternoon.

A hat-trick of tries in under twenty minutes from speedster Lilly Stoeger-Goddard saw the Bears get off to a flying start and further first half tries from Alice Middleton, Mackenzie Carson and Lucy Attwood saw Oliver’s side take a 36-0 lead at the half.

Dragons managed to get over in the second half, but the Bears finished with a flourish, scoring three times in the final fifteen minutes through Amber Reed, Naomi Keddie and Merryn Doidge to wrap up the win in style.

What Happened?

Stoeger-Goddard’s first two scores came in the opening ten minutes of play, her first came when she got onto the end of pin-point cross-field kick from Lucy Skuse and her second after racing onto a well place grubber kick from Lucy Attwood.

The lightning winger wrapped up her hat-trick on the nineteen minute mark after Ebony Jefferies turned the ball over in the Dragons twenty-two, the ball was then spun wide and it was a simple finish for the England U20 international.

Kim Oliver’s side continued to test the Dragons defence and were soon over again through summer recruit, Alice Middleton who finished well in the corner under pressure.

The final two scores of the half came from Mackenzie Carson who burst through the midfield and did fantastically well to finish from forty-five metres out and Lucy Attwood finished off a well worked backs move to dot down under the posts.

As the second half progressed the Dragons enjoyed more possession and got their reward going over in the corner, but Bristol responded quickly through Naomi Keddie, who drove her way over from short range.

Amber Reed came on as a second-half substitute and made an instant impact, dominating the tackle area as well as crashing over the line off a set-piece move to get a try of her own.

The Bears rounded off the game in style with a superb team try which started on their own try-line. Olivia Critchley’s darting run got the Bears on the front foot and out of the danger zone, the ball was then kept alive and fed through the hands until it  reached young full-back, Merryn Doidge who turned on the after-burners to race away and cap a 53-5 victory.

Key Moment:

Mackenzie Carson’s solo effort was a remarkable try, she burst through multiple tacklers in the centre of field and then put her foot on the gas to round the full-back and slide over.

The score now brings the Canadian U20 international’s try tally to three in two games, after the hooker bagged a double in the loss to Gloucester-Harptury last week.
