Bristol Rugby move to the top of the Greene King IPA Championship with 47-42 victory over Yorkshire Carnegie on Sunday.
Andy Robinson’s men scored six tries in a high-scoring affair at Ashton Gate as skipper Olly Robinson (2), Will Cliff, Ryan Edwards, Ross McMillan and Jack Lam all touched down.
Bristol lost Ben Glynn to injury inside the opening sixty seconds and that setback was compounded by Harry Leonard’s penalty goal, which put the visitors ahead.
Yorkshire Carnegie lost Chris Pilgrim to the sin-bin and, although Ross McMillan was held up over the whitewash, the hooker did touch down from a driving lineout soon after.
Leonard added another three pointer from long range, but Bristol skipper Olly Robinson touched down following good work from Jack Tovey to put the home side 12-6 up.
In a lively first half, Josh Bainbridge went over for Yorkshire from close range, before Gavin Henson’s penalty goal kept Bristol in front.
Another mammoth Leonard penalty ensured Carnegie regained the advantage ten minutes before the interval.
But Olly Robinson’s second try of the afternoon – capitalizing on a well-worked driving lineout to dab down – handed Bristol a 22-16 lead at the interval.
Andy Robinson’s men flew out of the traps in the second half and quickly built on their lead with a flurry of points.
First, Gavin Henson struck a penalty goal, before Ryan Edwards showed fleet of foot to round his marker and touch down in style from forty metres for an unconverted effort.
Josh Bainbridge added his second try when Yorkshire’s pack rumbled over from the set-piece to put the visitors within seven on the hour mark.
Moments later, Jack Lam marked his return to the blue and white hoops with a stunning show of brute strength, bulldozing his way over three defenders to cross for a converted try.
And Bristol added a sixth score when Will Cliff rounded off a flowing counter attack between backs and forwards to get the Ashton Gate crowd on their feet.
Josh Bainbridge sealed his hat-trick as the Yorkshire Carnegie pack continued to threaten at the set-piece, while Leonard’s conversion moved the score to 44-30.
Replacement fly half Adrian Jarvis’ penalty goal looked to have put Bristol in the clear, but two further tries by the prolific Josh Bainbridge, one of which was converted by Leonard, meant the visitors clawed their way back to within five points before the full-time whistle.
