Report: DMP Sharks 7-5 Bristol Bears Women

Bristol Bears Women fell to defeat away in the North East as DMP Sharks came out on top, 7-5, at the Northern Echo Arena in round twelve of the Tyrrell’s Premier 15s.

On a bitterly cold December evening, both sides struggled to get into the game in the first forty minutes with the inclement weather making for tricky handling conditions.

Midway through the first half, Bristol Bears Women won a series of penalties which saw them advance to the DMP five metre line. From the resulting play the Bears looked to power their way over the line, only to be held up by a resilient DMP defensive line.

The visitors were held up over the line yet again in the first half as the ball was played through the hands and made its way to the wing, but the Bears were met by a dogged DMP defence who managed to get bodies under the ball to prevent their Bristolian counterparts from dotting down.

Before the first half was over, DMP Sharks scored the first try of the game. The hosts had made a rare advance into the Bears’ twenty-two and scrum-half, Georgina Roberts picked from the base of a ruck and sniped through the Bears defence to give her side the lead.

As the second half began, the Bears picked up where they left off in the first half with the lion’s share of possession and territory but they were unable to find a way over the chalk.

The Bears got their breakthrough in the fifty-sixth minute as centre, Lucy Atwood picked off a gap in the DMP Sharks defence to dive over and bring her side back into the game.

With DMP having converted their try, the conversion would have levelled up the score for the visitors but in the swirling wind the Bears were unable to convert and the ball drifted just wide of the upright.

Oliver’s side continued to knock on the door for the remainder of the second half but the hosts held out to claim victory at a wet and windy Northern Echo Arena.
