Report: Gloucester-Hartpury 31-24 Bristol Bears Women

Second-half comeback from Kim Oliver’s side wasn’t enough to overcome west-country rivals in pre-season clash at Hartpury College.

As the new season began, the Bears showcased some of their young talent with Kim Oliver naming a youthful side - of which five were only seventeen years old - to make the journey up the M5.

Bristol Bears Women crossed on four occasion at Hartpury College through Rownita Marston, Michaela Roberts and a brace from Mackenzie Carson, but it wasn’t enough to prevent defeat in their first pre-season outing.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On a damp and cold summers evening it was the hosts that got out the blocks the quicker of the two sides when a set-play move saw Ellie Underwood race through a half gap and finish well from distance.

The Cherry and Whites doubled their lead through winger Kelly Smith, but Rownita Marston brought Kim Oliver’s side well back in to the game when she powered her way over from short range.

With the weather worsening, both sides tightened up their game and it was Gloucester-Hartpury who got the final score of the half as Courtney Gill dotted down to see the hosts take a 19-5 lead.

Smith bagged her second of the night ten minutes after the interval, but the Bears got themselves right back into the game with two quick fire scores of their own.

Reed took a tap penalty deep in the Gloucester-Hartpury half and caught the defence off-guard, slick handling from Poppy Leitch saw her float a perfect pass to Michaela Roberts, who slid over in the corner.

Bristol began to pick up the tempo and for a period the hosts couldn’t live with them, Mackenzie Carson’s quick feet saw a gap open up for her in the centre of the field and she raced away to dot down under the posts.

With five minutes to go Gloucester-Hartpury sealed the game with a score from a strong driving line-out, but it was the Bears who finished the stronger of the two sides.

Carson had the last say, securing her brace for the evening as she received the ball five metres out, the Canadian International darted her way past an oncoming defender and the powered through another to get the ball over the line.
