Report: Newcastle Falcons 30-15 Bristol Bears

Bristol Bears suffered a first defeat of the Gallagher Premiership season as they were outgunned by Newcastle Falcons at Kingston Park on Friday night.

Henry Purdy and Rich Lane touched down in the second half to give Pat Lam’s men a sniff, but the Falcons took charge with four tries courtesy of Matteo Carreras (2), Connor Collett and George McGuigan.

WHAT HAPPENED?

AJ MacGinty came close to opening the scoring on 11 minutes when Piers O’Conor’s break sent the fly-half clear, only for a heroic last-ditch tackle from Carreras denying him a first try in Bears colours.

The number ten duly knocked over the resulting penalty for the first points of the evening, before the Falcons clicked into gear with the game’s opening try. Schoeman’s long pass located Carreras in the left-hand corner – and after Ed Holmes was sin-binned for a late tackle, Connor Collett doubled the Falcons’ advantage from close range.

George McGuigan powered over from close range for try number three of dominant half for the hosts, but the Bears hit back early in the second period following yellow cards to Collett and Sean Robinson.

Henry Purdy darted over in the corner and Rich Lane bagged his first Premiership try to bring the Bears back into striking range, but two penalties from the boot of Schoeman and a sensational late solo score from Carreras sealed victory for the Falcons.
