Bristol Rugby secured a hard-fought 16-10 victory over Nottingham in difficult conditions on Saturday.
Tom Varndell bagged a brace to secure a first win of 2016 in bog-like conditions at the Lady Bay Sports Ground.
In a scrappy opening quarter, Adrian Jarvis struck the upright with a penalty goal attempt, before Bristol did go in front after a spell of pressure.
Tom Varndell was the man who finished a slick move that saw Will Cliff and Mitch Eadie exchange passes, although Jarvis couldn’t add the conversion.
Nottingham came close before the interval, but Bristol held firm to maintain a 0-5 lead at the half-time break.
The visitors started the second half in explosive fashion as Tom Varndell raced in for his second of the afternoon following Marc Jones’ determined gallop downfield.
Lawrence Rayner’s penalty goal put Nottingham within a converted try at 3-10, but an Adrian Jarvis three pointer soon after gave Robinson’s men breathing space.
Rayner skewed an attempt at the posts late on, while Jarvis landed an attempt of his own in the dying stages. Billy Robinson’s last-gasp try handed Nottingham a consolation, but Bristol held on to get the new year underway with a Greene King IPA Championship victory.
