Report: Wasps Women 5-7 Bristol Bears Women

Bristol Bears held on to grind out the 5-7 win against Wasps in wintry conditions at Twyford Avenue on Saturday afternoon.

In sodden conditions in West London, the Bears fell behind early on to Maud Muir's powerful try, before Phoebe Murray sliced through the hosts' to defence from a perfectly executed set play, with Amber Reed's conversion edging Dave Ward's side in front - a lead they would not relinquish.

What happened?

Early pressure from the hosts after a charge down kick left Bristol scrambling their defences to keep the Wasps at bay. Securing the scrum from a knock on, a quick attack sent Wasps Maud Muir over the line for the opening try with no conversion.

Bristol’s attack looked to answer back almost immediately after securing the lineout in Wasps 22. Despite losing possession from the throw in, Rownita Marston clawed it back to keep the Bears on the hunt. Sending the ball out wide a quick break from Phoebe Murray saw the centre crash over the line to level the scores. Amber Reed slicing the conversion through the sticks to put the visitors ahead.

A dogged display in the wind and rain left both sides struggling to gain the upper hand with neither able to capitalise against the conditions.

Coming out for the second half, a scrum for Wasps in Bristol’s 22 looked to be the making of a second try for hosts. But a relentless effort from the pack kept them at bay. Replacement Ellie Mulhearn playing a key role up front.

Despite a scoreless second half, Bears showed glimmers of adding to their points on the board. Player of the match Kayleigh Powell slicing a beautiful kick from deep in her own half into our opponents for the 50-22.

Wasps too had their chances but the Bears defence held firm to deny their hosts the chance to go ahead.

With less than five minutes on the clock, Bristol looked to finish on a high with a quick attack in Wasps 22. Conjuring their way through the phases, the try looked in their grasp, but slippery conditions let the ball loose leaving Bristol to grind out the slim 5-7 victory.
