Report: Worcester Valkyries 10-50 Bristol Bears Women

A first half Lucy Attwood hat-trick inspired Bristol Bears Women to back-to-back bonus point victories in the Tyrrell’s Premier 15s as they ran in eight tries against Worcester Valkyries at Sixways Stadium.

Kim Oliver’s side went in the half time break 31-5 up, thanks to a first half Lucy Attwood hat-trick as well as a try from Elinor Snowsill and a fine solo effort from Merryn Doidge.

Mackenzie Carson, Phoebe Murray and Poppy Leitch all crossed in an attritional second half to wrap up the victory for the west country side.

What Happened?

The Bears opened the scoring inside five minute as Mackenzie Carson broke into the Valkyries twenty-two after a strong driving maul, the flanker was hauled down metres from the line, but the ball was recycled and Lucy Attwood crossed under the posts.

Elinor Snowsill made it three tries in two games as she displayed some fine individual skill down the short-side to go over in the corner, before the Valkyries hit back and drove over a line-out which saw captain Lark Davies come away with the try.

Oliver’s side didn’t waste any time in hitting back as the Valkyries failed to deal with the re-start, which resulted in Phoebe Murray breaking through the defence and putting Lucy Attwood for her second of the afternoon.

As the first half progressed the Bears began to go through the gears and they secured the bonus-point thanks to a fine solo effort from Merryn Doidge - the full-back scooped up a loose kick from the hosts on halfway and set off on a mazing run down the right wing, beating three defenders on her way to the line.

Attwood secured her hat-trick in the final few minutes of the first period, she threw an outrageous dummy pass which saw the Valkyries defence part and the young centre crossed for the Bears’ fifth score of the game.

Merryn Doidge continued her fine start to the season at full-back (via JMPUK).

The Bears got the first score of the second period as Carson was the quickest to react to a loose ball at scrum-time, the Canadian under-20 international scooped up the ball and won the footrace to the line.

Worcester began to exert some pressure of their own and the hosts got their reward as Davies crossed for her second of the afternoon midway through the second half.

Oliver’s side went on to score a further two tries before the eighty minutes was out.

First, Caity Mattinson’s deadly footwork saw her break through the Valkyries defence and put Phoebe Murray over, before Poppy Leitch powered over the line in the closing minutes to wrap up the victory at a wet and windy Sixways Stadium.
