Bristol Rugby guaranteed their place in the playoffs with a 23-7 victory over Yorkshire Carnegie on Sunday.

Gavin Henson struck six successful penalties with the boot, while Jack Lam touched down late on to hand the visitors an eighth successive win in the Greene King IPA Championship.

In a closely contested opening period, Bristol were reduced to fourteen men when Tom Varndell for an adjudged deliberate knock-on.

And Yorkshire took full advantage as Richard Beck burrowed over from close range, while Kevin Sinfield converted with ease.

Two Gavin Henson penalties reduced the deficit to a single point, before David Dohertyโ€™s effort was chalked off for an adjudged forward pass in the build up.

A third successful Gavin Henson three-pointer edged Bristol ahead for the first time in the game on the stroke of half-time.

Henson had a chance to extend the lead but the fly half missed the target with two successive penalty goal efforts.

But the visiting fly half did land his fourth penalty on the hour mark to push Bristol 7-12 ahead in an attritional second period.

A further Henson penalty gave Bristol breathing space with ten minutes remaining, before Phil Nilsen saw yellow for the hosts for a professional foul.

Shortly after, Jack Lam bundled his way over from close range for an unconverted try, while Gavin Henson added to his impressive kicking haul to hand Bristol an impressive away-day victory.
