‘Slow start cost us’ - Lam

A frustrated Pat Lam admitted a disappointing first-half defensive display was Bristol Bears’ undoing against Wasps, but the head coach praised his side’s 30-minute revival to claim two losing bonus points at the Ricoh Arena.

Wasps scored twice in the opening ten minutes of either half to storm into a 32-7 lead, but a Harry Thacker inspired fightback ensured Bristol wouldn’t leave Coventry empty-handed.

And at the final whistle, Lan said frustration at a below-par defensive showing was the overriding emotion.

“We got off to a terrible start, we slipped a few tackles and they put us under a lot of pressure and they scored two great tries,” he said.

“We didn’t get our hands on the ball in the first ten minutes which was costly for us. We managed to get ourselves back in it and nearly gave ourselves a chance to win.

“The two points are positive, but we are frustrated we gave them five by giving them such a head start."

Pat Lam, head coach

“But fair play to them, at 32-7 down to get back to be in with a chance of winning the game was pleasing and we even had chances after that.

“The two points are positive, but we are frustrated we gave them five by giving them such a head start.
“In the first half, we were disappointed with our defence and our systems and structures. We fell off too many tackles but in the second-half we were better.

“Ultimately, we had 50 good minutes last week and 30 good minutes this week, so we need try and put together 80 good minutes.”
