Talking points: Connacht Rugby (a) - Champions Cup

Check out they key talking points from this week's media session, as Director of Rugby, Pat Lam and scrum half, Harry Randall previewed Sunday's Heineken Champions Cup clash with Connacht Rugby (5.30PM KO, live on BT Sport 1 HD).

'Getting it right'

Pat Lam on making improvements: “The beauty of this competition and any finals rugby is that everyone wants the outcome, but it completely comes back to the process and the game plan, and the work we do as a team to get that right.

“If we get all of that right, I’m confident we’ll get the W – if we don’t, as we saw on the weekend, if we’re inconsistent with getting those roles right, you end up with what happened last week.

Galway grind

Randall on Connacht threat: “Connacht really fronted up against Racing and showed the type of team they are.

“They will put pressure on you and come at you. We know the conditions could well be wet and windy, so it’s a big challenge for us and for the team, and after a loss last weekend, we’re going out there aiming to get the full five points.

“The main area of improvement is cutting out the errors – not allowing them into the game as easy as we did against Clermont. We need to control the game and control the tempo and know we’ve got the game to beat them.”

'Mentally and physically prepared'

Pat Lam on Bears' preparations: “We’re expecting wind and rain, and it’s a special place – but from the players, we’re going to get unbelievable commitment from the Connacht boys, they will throw their bodies on the line and they’ll come hard at us.

“We’ve got to make sure that we’re mentally and physically prepared to not only play our game, but make sure that our physicality levels are right and that we can not only take what they do, but also ensure that we’re ready to be as strong as we can.

“So, it’s great for the development of this team to face these sorts of challenges and hopefully come out the other end with the win.”
