Talking points: Newcastle Falcons (h) - Gallagher Premiership

Check out they key talking points from this week's media session, as Director of Rugby, Pat Lam and back, Ioan Lloyd previewed the New Year's Day Gallagher Premiership clash with Newcastle Falcons at Ashton Gate (3PM KO, live on BT Sport 2 Extra HD).

World class duo set for return

Pat Lam on the return from injury of Charles Piutau and Luke Morahan: "Good news, they're both fit and available. They're both champing at the bit to get going and ready to go.

The boys who have been here since the start with the short turnaround from last season have done a great job but we are starting to get more and more depth and be able to give guys breaks so we are pleased where we are but that first half (against Quins) showed we still have a bit of work to do.”

Enforced reshuffle

Lam on a Covid-enforced reshuffle in the front-row: “We probably didn’t need to isolate all the front rowers but in precaution we moved them all out and told them not to come in and we go from there. It’s a massive effort from everyone to have the sport running but we are also conscious that we all make the right decisions for safety. They are ruled out, they are in isolation for ten days.

“We don’t come together on Monday at all because that is testing day. The boys come in at individual times, get their tests, drive up and go and then we wait for the results. Once that new variant came out and things looked like spiking we made a conscious decision that we won’t come together until we get the results. When you have no positive tests it is easier to slacken but we just said let’s make sure, we’ll take as much precaution and I’m thankful we did."

Versatility

Ioan Lloyd on his positional versatility: “Playing on the wing helps me learning-wise. Getting to see the game from a different position is really useful to my development. Whether I’m at 10 or 15, I’ll have an appreciation of what other players are trying to bring to the game.

“There are so many world-class players at the Bears. Semi (Radradra) is funny, a very bubbly character, a great bloke to have around the club. What he does on the field speaks for itself. Then there’s Charles (Piutau) and Max (Malins), who go out of their way to help everybody out.”
