‘Team culture driving us forwards’ – Thacker

Harry Thacker celebrated Bristol Bears’ team culture after delivering the pivotal try in Saturday’s dramatic away win at Leicester Tigers.

The hooker’s 75th-minute try against his former employers saw Bristol snatch a second away win of the season and a first at Welford Road since 2002 - and Thacker believes the ‘team buy-in’ is driving the club in the right direction.

“From one to 23, everyone did their job and their role and stuck to our process,” he said.

“The amount of times we’ve stood here at the end of games and said ‘it’s just one or two individual errors that have cost us’ – it’s finally coming through towards the back end of the season.

“For us, top six was always on the cards and we’ve had that belief that we’ve got the players, the tactics and the technical abilities to be there, and it’s probably just taken a bit of time with a lot of new players in the squad, and we’ve really started to click.

“The culture we’re building here is amazing. Whether you are backroom staff or on the pitch, it’s a whole team buy-in and that’s driving the club forwards.”

Pat Lam, head coach

“Don’t get me wrong, we’re still far off what we can be, and probably butchered two or three more tries out there today and we’re realistic with that.

“But to come away, which we’ve struggled with all season, and get a win here, it’s a class result.

“The culture we’re building here is amazing. Whether you are backroom staff or on the pitch, it’s a whole team buy-in and that’s driving the club forwards.”

Speaking about his match-winning try, Thacker added: “I was just hanging off the back, it was everyone in front who did the hard work.

“I’m not going to take any credit for that, even the backs joined in and gave me the glory, but it was nice to get on the scoresheet.”
