'Territory battle was key' - Piutau

Charles Piutau hailed the Bears’ pragmatic approach as they overcame torrential rain and a battling Wasps side to earn a 10th Gallagher Premiership win of the season.

'Forwards set the platform'

Piutau was the star of the show, laying on two magical assists for Piers O’Conor and Niyi Adeolokun on the way to a bonus-point victory at Ashton Gate, and the full-back said game management had been key to the result.

“In the past, we’ve come out on the wrong side of these games, but I’m just proud of the effort from the guys, especially some of the young guys who have stepped in due to injuries, guys like Tiff Eden, who I thought I played well - and out forwards really set a platform for us today.

“We knew in the past, mistakes against Wasps had cost us, so we chose our moments when to attack. We had in our mind that we wanted to play rugby and be expansive, but not at the risk of us losing points

“I think the territory battle was key for us. We knew if we could get into their half, we would come away with points. Discipline was behind our first-half performance, but we cut down the penalties in the second half and that really helped us.”
