‘The effort was 'A' grade’ - Lam

A disappointed Pat Lam praised the effort and commitment of his Bristol Bears side, after a last-gasp penalty try saw Exeter Chiefs snatch a dramatic victory at Ashton Gate on Sunday afternoon.

Tries from Charles Piutau and Luke Morahan and 19 points from the boot of Callum Sheedy saw the hosts lead 29-24 heading into the final play, but the awarding of the 83rd-minute try broke Bristol hearts, leaving the head coach ‘gutted but proud’.

“We have got to acknowledge that Exeter are a good side, well coached, and I am very proud of the guys. The effort was A-grade.
“We have come a long way from where we were before and are obviously gutted we didn’t get the game in the end.

“They gave everything, and that is all I can ask of the guys. We have to move on and take the things we did well and improve on the things we didn’t.

“Our set-piece was good last week and was good again this week. We are building pressure in the right areas of the field. There was some really good rugby out there."

Pat Lam, head coach

"It was a great game of rugby, both teams played outstanding rugby. We come out of the game with plenty of confidence but for the game to come down to a decision like that is not good.

"It's not hard to see the positives from that game, I saw them straight away regardless of the result. There was some outstanding stuff right across the board."

Bristol Bears travel to the Ricoh Arena to take on Wasps on Saturday, before welcoming Leicester Tigers to Ashton Gate on Saturday, 1st December. Purchase tickets by clicking here.
