Bristol Bears seeks a Head of Medical to provide medical services to the Bristol Bears First Team, Women’s and Academy squads.

REPORTEES:     First Team, Women’s & Academy Physios, Therapists & Doctors          

Bristol Bears Rugby is part of Stephen Lansdown’s sporting group of companies which includes Bristol Sport, Bristol City Football, Bristol Flyers Basketball and each of their respective community charities.

Our ambition is ‘to inspire our community through rugby success’. Our supporters regularly attend Ashton Gate Stadium to watch the team perform in Premiership and European Cup Competitions.

JOB PURPOSE

To provide medical services to the Bristol Bears First Team, Women’s and Academy squads.

Work with the performance team to develop a leading performance & medical service to support the players on and off the field.

KEY OBJECTIVES

  • Working directly with the players, you will be responsible for leading the medical team to ensure that the players receive the best possible medical care and service.
  • Diagnose, treat, and refer player injuries as appropriate and deliver best practice sports medicine services.
  • To build robust and resilient players who can thrive at the highest level.
  • To develop a system that captures accurate information that will help us to track injury trends.
  • Contribute positively to the Bears vision and culture

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (KPIs)

  • To ensure the delivery, development and rehabilitation of all medical and musculoskeletal care relating to players is operating to the highest level. It is expected that this delivery is through high professional standards utilising up to date research and evidence-based practice.
  • To communicate on the care and injury status of players to key stakeholders.
  • To lead on the medical assessment of new signings.
  • To lead and maintain secure, accurate and up-to-date medical records.
  • To manage the first team medical budget.
  • To organise and lead on all medical testing and final accountability for cardiac screening.
  • Liase with international medical teams on respective Elite Player Squads.
  • Excellent leadership qualities to drive professional standards and ensure job fulfilment of the department staff.
  • Perform quarterly staff appraisals in line with club policy.
  • To assist in the development of evidence-based protocols and research for all areas of medical services throughout the club. There is an expectation to use all available resources including the latest research, collaborating with a successful network of external clinical specialists and university links.

Essential Skills

  • BSc degree in Physiotherapy
  • Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP)
  • Registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • At least 5 years working in high performance sport including a rugby team environment.

Desirable Skills

  • Previous experience leading a medical or physiotherapy team in a high-performance sport setting
  • Post-graduate qualification in sports medicine or a related area
  • Proven track record in completing injury audits and implementing strategies to address injury trends. 

Health and Safety

  • Responsible for ensuring all health and safety procedures are followed at all times, with relevant paperwork to support
  • To ensure all employees complete their trained required to do their job 
  • Report all incidents and accidents as required
  • To report any hazards detected  
  • To complete and review the risk assessments for the department  

Human Resources Activities

  • Supports a departmental induction program for employees to receive the appropriate new hire training to successfully perform their job
  • Ensures employee understand expectations and parameters
  • Participates in the employee performance appraisal process, providing constructive feedback as needed
  • Ensure employee holiday allocation is utilised on a quarterly basis
  • Lead in the recruitment of new employees ensuring best practice and hiring the right applicant for the role

Salary:                          Competitive
Contract:                      Full time, 22-month fixed term
