Video: Lam delighted with Barbarians' performance

Pat Lam lavished praise on his Barbarians side after they ran in nine tries to defeat Eddie Jones’ England 45-63 at Twickenham on Sunday.

Chris Ashton’s 24-minute hat-trick, together with tries from Victor Vito, Finn Russell, Semi Radradra, Sitaleki Timani and Greg Laidlaw.

And head coach Lam – who was joined in the Barbarians camp by assistant coach, Conor McPhillips, forwards coach, Jon Thomas, and head of performance analysis, Stuart Powell, said the victory was a ‘celebration’ of the Barbarians’ great traditions:

“I’m extremely proud,” he said. “It’s been an exciting five days but a challenging five days as well, to get a few training sessions, some good relationship building.

“I said to them before the game: we want to win, that’s the number one thing. That’s the outcome, but the process, purely, is about celebration – celebrate the fact that we’ve got to know each other well; celebrate that this team is a very good team, but it will never play together again; and also, let’s celebrate Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe’s career – and he’s had a tremendous career and has been a very good captain for us.

“So, they went out and celebrated and we put in a few structures we could all play, but I’m really pleased.

“It’s a team game - there’s a lot of individuals - but they played as a team and worked hard for each other, so I’m very, very pleased.”
