Ward hails Bears support ahead of new season

An open letter to supporters from Bears Women Head Coach Dave Ward.

Dear Bears supporters,

Wow, what can I say? For us to have surpassed 150 season tickets is an incredible achievement and something we are very of proud of heading into such an exciting period for women’s rugby.

With the Rugby World Cup fast approaching, we have also been busy preparing for a cup campaign that last year took us to the semi-final stage. This year, we plan to go one step further and can’t wait to see you all at Shaftesbury Park on Saturday for our opening round fixture against Sale Sharks.

We are now into week eight of pre-season, with the women returning at the back of July to put themselves through their paces. We started on day one with the dreaded ‘Bronco’ followed by an intense five-week block, culminating with a competitive fixture against Leicester Tigers at the High Performance Centre. This fixture gave our young squad the opportunity to put all of their hard work into practice and they didn’t disappoint with some excellent performances from some of our youngest players.

We are incredibly lucky at Bears, not only to have such talented players, but also talented staff and this has been recognised with Kate Tyler (Head of Medical) being invited to New Zealand to work alongside the Red Roses in their quest for World Cup glory. We wish Kate and all our Red Roses and Welsh internationals the best of luck for what is to come in New Zealand.

Finally, I would like to say a huge thank you to all our supporters for your incredible backing last season - and for the effort that is clearly being made heading into the new campaign.

We can’t wait to get going at Shaftesbury Park and Ashton Gate, and we are proud to have you by our side as we embark upon another incredible journey.

See you on the touchline.

Dave Ward
