Ward hails talent at Centre of Excellence trial day

Thirty-eight girls from clubs attended the Bears Centre of Excellence session at Shaftesbury Park on Sunday looking to secure a spot in next season’s squad.

The session, held at Shaftesbury Park, showcased the breadth of talent from across the region and Centre of Excellence Head Coach, Rich Hynes, was impressed by what he saw:

“We’re really excited to see the programme continue to build on the success of last season. With eight girls already invited to the England U18 South training camp in August, three currently away with the England U18 Sevens squad and eight girls from last season’s C of E at pre-season with the senior squad this year, the bar is quite high.

“We’ve seen enough talent on show today to feel confident in another successful year. It’s always extremely difficult to whittle the numbers down but we are really keen to ensure that our involvement with all of the players does not end today, and for those that aren’t initially selected, we will be getting out and about in the community and with the girls clubs and college sides to hopefully inspire them to keep chasing their dreams.”

Bears Women Head Coach, Dave Ward, added: "I would like to firstly give credit to the local coaches who have provided a great foundation for all the girls who attended, the skill set and endeavour shown by all the girls was a credit to the clubs and the hard work that has gone in.

"Every year the talent and skill is increasing and it exciting to see the next generation of players come through the pathway and hopefully go on to represent the Bristol Bears."
