'We had a lot to play for' - Purdy

Henry Purdy dedicated Friday night’s victory over Northampton Saints to two long-serving members of the club’s management, after they lost close family members to Covid-19 in recent weeks.

The teams observed a minutes silence before kick-off in solidarity with Head of Performance Analysis, Stuart Powell and Team Doctor, Harriet Collins, and Purdy admits the Bears ‘had a lot to play for’ this week.

“You talk about character, we had a lot to play for this week. I want to mention Stu and Harriet - their loss gave us a lot to play for this week and going forwards, and I just want to say that they are in our thoughts, we were talking about them all week and want to dedicate that result to them."

The Bears scored 10 unanswered points in the final eight minutes to seal a dramatic win, with Sam Bedlow’s 80th-minute penalty snatching the victory – and Purdy, who scored his side’s opening try on the night, praised the character of the group.

'Credit to Sam Bedlow'

"It does feel like we dodged a bullet there and there's a lot of relief in the changing room. We knew Saints were going to come pretty desperate after a few tough losses, and they were gritty, they were sticky and at times, it felt like we were doing our best to throw it away.

"We always talk about sticking to our systems and sticking to our processes, and finding solutions - and in the end, we did that and managed to fall the right side of it. Sometimes, those results, you've just got to enjoy,

"Credit to lads like Sam Bedlow, coming on and putting his big boot through it to get us the win.”
