‘We’re relishing Tigers challenge’ - Lam

Pat Lam has called for his players to step up to the plate when Leicester Tigers visit Ashton Gate on Saturday (1pm KO).

Bristol Bears welcome Geordan Murphy’s side to BS3 off the back of a narrow defeat to Wasps at the Ricoh Arena, as Harry Thacker’s 33-minute hat-trick almost inspired a remarkable turnaround in Coventry.

And the head coach says his players must take their game to the next level on Saturday.

“We got off to a slow start at Wasps, a lot of guys struggled early on but came back into it – and it’s a great credit, because at 32-7, it could have been a horrific show and the boys stepped up and came back strong to put ourselves in with a chance to win the game,” said Lam.

“It’s just a lesson. When we spoke about, it’s just about making sure that within the team, individuals have to make sure they do whatever it takes to step up.

“At the weekend, Charles Piutau, Steven Luatua and John Afoa were outstanding, they’ve been in this environment and played at higher levels and they prepared themselves accordingly. They played well the week before too, and that’s the learning that some of the younger lads can take from that - playing well and then backing that up.

“Leicester have got the history, they’ve got the reputation. When you look at them at this time of year, their whole game is based traditionally around physicality. So, that’s a great challenge for our boys."

“It’s another good crowd expected, and we love being at home, but ultimately, we understand the challenge we face.

If you look at the Premiership table from fifth down to 12th, you’ve got eight or nine points covering those teams. Everyone can see the value of the points.”

Leicester will welcome back their international contingent, including England’s George Ford, Ben Youngs and Manu Tuilagi, and Lam says Bristol are relishing the challenge.

“It’s what we want, we want to play the best teams with the best players. That’s what rugby is about, you want to play at the highest level, it’s why you want to be in the Premiership.

“Leicester have got the history, they’ve got the reputation. When you look at them at this time of year, their whole game is based traditionally around physicality. So, that’s a great challenge for our boys.

“The week we’re having is crucial so that we go into that game with a lot of confidence.”
