‘We stuck to the script’ – Lam

Pat Lam lauded his players for sticking to the script after they delivered a courageous defensive display to see off local rivals Bath and record a fourth successive win in the Gallagher Premiership.

First-half tries from Chris Vui and Alapati Leiua and another after the break from Harry Randall sealed a first win at The Recreation Ground in 14 years – and the Director of Rugby hailed ‘a very big win’ for his side.

"I’m very, very proud of the guys. That’s the result of a lot of work. We had a pretty physical week, we had to create a game plan because we were coming down to the toughest conditions in the Premiership.

"We talked about not getting bored of the game we needed to play to win. We selected the group accordingly and it was a very big win.

"Bath are going well because they’re winning games on this field and we did a lot of work, as coaches, looking at the way we play and we started the week by saying, ‘we’ve got to be excited, boys, to come down and play the rugby that we need to win’.
"Not necessarily the rugby that you want to do, but is about the teamwork, graft. And we set that mindset right at the beginning and the boys stuck to it.

"We knew the areas we wanted to attack, and it was frustrating because the only way we let them in was errors, silly mistakes and penalties. We had to grind it out, hang in there and the boys did it with our defence.”

Bristol Bears welcome Harlequins to Ashton Gate this Sunday (1pm KO) and tickets are on sale now.
