“We're all very focussed and driven to get better”- Oliver

Head coach Kim Oliver reflects on the first week of pre-season and speaks about the brand of rugby the Bears will be looking to play this season.

The minds of the players have been re-focussed and the cobwebs blown out as the Bristol Bears Women have begun their preparations for the new Tyrrell’s Premier 15s season.

With a full week’s worth of training now under their belts, players’ skills having been sharpened and miles put into their legs as the Bears continuing to grow as a collective.

There is also an evident hunger amongst the camp to better last year’s performances, a view echoed by Oliver.

“It’s been great to get the girls back together this past week, we're all very focussed and driven to get better going into this pre-season.

“We’ve been working to get our fitness levels up and we’ve combined that with working on our skill-set so the girls are working under fatigue to make training as game related as possible.”

Rigorous planning has taken place to ensure training allows the Bears to progress their body, mind and skill-set to make sure they’re in the best shape possible come the start of the season.

“There’s been a lot of planning put in place by the coaches, especially the strength and conditioning guys to make sure that we get the players to where we want them to be.”

This is Oliver’s first full pre-season since taking over the role of head coach back in October and the former Red Rose spoke of the importance of her coaching team getting that time with their players.

“It’s an exciting time for the players and the coaching staff as it’s our first full pre-season and this time is valuable as it will allow us to work closely with the girls and build on our brand of rugby.”

The Bears have an exciting side containing a whole host of age-range and senior internationals brimming with talent and desire.

There is also plenty of speed and power throughout the ranks and that is ultimately what will shape the brand of rugby put on display by Oliver’s side.

“We’re fortunate to have a really mobile pack and a very talented back-line, and we’re working towards utilising that to play fast and expansive rugby throughout this season.”

For now the hard graft continues for the Bristol Bears Women as they develop as a group and build towards the return of the Tyrell’s Premier 15s in early September.
