England put on a gutsy display to see off France, whilst Wales lost to tournament hosts New Zealand.
Le Crunch took place on Saturday in Whangarei and it didn’t disappoint. England managed to come out on top, but only just 7-13.
France lost two of their star players early on due to injury. The Bears' Abie Ward looked to have scored in the first-half, but France’s defence throughout the whole match restricted England’s style of play.
Sarah Bern was also denied after the ball was knocked from her grasps having powered over the try line.
An Emily Scarett try, which she converted, and two penalties from the back handed England a statement win, and secured the Red Roses a spot in the quarter-finals.
Wales were in action the following day in front of a sell-out crowd in Auckland against hosts New Zealand.
The hosts came out on top, but Wales enjoyed their fair share of possession and scrum dominance.
Ffion Lewis scored in the first half and Sioned Harries in the second for Wales. Bears' Elinor Snowsill slotted one of the conversions.
Wales now slip to third behind Australia in Pool A on points difference.
Wales face Australia in their final Pool A fixture in Whangarei on Saturday, October 22nd (2:15AM UK time), whilst the Red Roses take on South Africa in Pool C in Auckland on Sunday, October 23rd (5:45AM UK time).
