World Cup winner Sophie Halhead to join Bears Women board

England international and World Cup winner, Sophie Halhead will join the Bears Women board ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

The former England and Bristol prop made 71 appearances for her country, winning the 2014 World Cup in France.

Halhead (nee Hemming) also won the RFU Linda Uttley Award in recognition of her dedication and commitment to the women's game.

Halhead said: “Since retiring from playing international and club rugby, I’ve taken a step away from the game to focus on my career as a veterinary Clinical Director and my young family.

“Within this time, the success and development of Bristol Bears Women has been incredible, both on and off the pitch. Having spent my playing days exclusively in Bristol, my loyalty to Bristol Bears is strong and I am excited to return to the Bristol Bears family by joining Paul Beet, Lisa Knights, Gavin Marshall and Tom Tainton on the women’s board to ensure that we continue to drive this momentum.”

Chairman Paul Beet said: "Sophie brings a wealth of experience and media profile to our board and we’re delighted to welcome her back into the Bears family.

“Building on a hugely successful season on and off the field, Sophie’s knowledge of the women’s game and her understanding of high-performance environments will help us to take the Bears, and the women’s game, to the next level.”

Gavin Marshall and Tom Tainton will also join the board for the new season, alongside Paul Beet and Lisa Knights.
