Young Red Roses power past USA

Bristol Bears Women had five players in action as the Young Red Roses emphatically beat the USA 62-0 at Loughborough University.

What Happened?

Jo Yapp’s side got off to the perfect start as Phoebe Murray burst through the USA defensive line to get over the chalk and opening the scoring.

It would be another Bear who doubled the Young Red Roses’ lead as Lucie Skuse showed a burst of pace to break down the right wing and cross the whitewash.

Further scores from Carys Cox and Cara Clarke saw Jo Yapp’s side take a 22-0 lead heading into half-time.

Akina Gondwe opened the scoring in the second half before Cox and Clarke both grabbed their second. Ebony Jefferies’ neat offload then put Detysha Harper in for the Young Red Roses’ eighth try of the game.

As the game reached the closing stages Jefferies crossed for the penultimate try of the game with Jess Cooksey rounding off the scoring.

England will now face Canada in round two of the Tri Nations Cup on Sunday, July 28th.

Reaction:

England Women U20s head coach Jo Yapp said: "We are really pleased with the girls’ efforts overall because we wanted to play a wider game and they really tried hard to do that.

"We made a few mistakes in the first half but in the second period we started to correct those and we played simple but effective rugby which was exactly what we wanted. They worked so hard this week so to see some of it come off is really satisfying.”
